Site Surveys

A proper site survey takes the guesswork out of signage. We check measurements, sightlines, mounting points and access so the sign can be made and fitted correctly first time.

What We Check On Site

Our site surveys are done for new signs, replacement boards and tricky installs where access, wind load or wall condition can affect the final result. We visit your premises in Boksburg, across the East Rand, and further into Gauteng where needed, then measure the area and assess how the sign will sit in relation to traffic, pedestrians and nearby buildings. For roadside boards and estate-agent boards, we also check viewing distance, angle and any municipal restrictions that may apply.

The survey is not just about length and width. We look at the fixing surface, whether it is brick, cladding, concrete, steel or a fence line, and note if the area has cables, pipes, lighting or uneven walls. That helps us specify the right brackets, screws, plugs or frame work. It also helps avoid damage to painted fascias, tiled surfaces or waterproofing, which is a common issue on older commercial properties.

  • Measured sign face size in millimetres and metres
  • Viewing angle from the street, driveway or entrance
  • Mounting height and reach requirements
  • Access for ladders, lifts or scaffolding
  • Condition of the wall, posts or frame
  • Exposure to sun, rain, dust and wind

Why A Survey Saves Time And Cost

Many sign issues start with an assumption. A board that looks simple on paper can be harder on site if the wall is out of square, the fixing points are weak, or there is no safe way to reach the installation area. A survey limits those surprises and gives the production team the right information before manufacture begins. That means fewer call-backs, less rework and a cleaner finish.

It is especially useful for fleet marking, shopfront fascias, safety signs and site boards where exact placement matters. If a property is exposed to load-shedding related dark periods, we can also advise on reflectivity, illumination and how the sign will read at night. On coastal routes or high dust areas, we may recommend materials and fixing methods that cope better with moisture, salt air or grime build-up. Small details like this make a difference to how long the sign lasts and how often it needs attention.

We also use the survey to flag any permissions or body corporate conditions that could affect the job. In some business parks and residential estates, board size, placement and display period can all be controlled. It is better to know that upfront than to find out after the sign has been made.

How The Survey Process Works

Once you send an enquiry through the contact form, our team will confirm the site, the sign type and the timing that suits you. Lerato Mokoena and Nokuthula Dlamini handle the early coordination, then the survey is assigned to the relevant production and installation people depending on the job. For example, Sibusiso Khumalo will often lead the installation review where access is tight, while Johan Pretorius checks what the workshop will need for manufacture.

On site, we take photos, record dimensions and note any practical issues. Ayesha Patel may prepare artwork or layout follow-up once the measurements are confirmed, especially where text needs to line up with a wall opening, gate, vehicle panel or existing logo panel. If the sign is being replaced, we check whether old fixing points can be reused or if fresh holes and sealing will be needed.

  • Initial enquiry and job brief confirmation
  • Site visit and measurements
  • Access, fixing and safety assessment
  • Photo record and notes for production
  • Recommendation for manufacture and fitment
  • Quote based on the site details and sign type

For larger sites, we may split the survey into more than one area if the signs are spread across a warehouse yard, office block, factory entrance or multiple buildings. That gives a more accurate scope and avoids missed items.

What Information You Receive After The Visit

After the survey, you receive the key details needed for quoting and production. That includes the measured size, fixing method suggestion, access notes and any warning points that could affect installation timing. If a scaffold, ladder or cherry picker is likely to be required, we will state that plainly so it can be planned before the crew arrives.

For signboards, we also note board thickness, post spacing and the likely wind exposure. A 3 mm aluminium composite panel on a roadside face is not the same as a 6 mm solid panel on a sheltered wall, so the survey will reflect the correct material choice. For interior signage, we check wall finish and whether the surface is suitable for vinyl, standoffs or direct mount letters.

The report is also useful for maintaining consistency across branch signage in areas like Benoni, Germiston, Kempton Park, Alberton, Springs, Edenvale and Midrand. If you need a standard look across several sites, the survey data helps keep dimensions and placement aligned, even when the buildings differ. That kind of control matters for chain stores, property managers and companies with a visible street presence.

Turnaround And Timing For Surveys

Survey timing depends on the site and access, but we usually work to a practical schedule rather than keeping you waiting. Straightforward locations can often be checked within a short lead time, while larger industrial sites or places with controlled access may need booking around gate procedures, inductions or quiet production hours. We always plan with the working day in mind, especially where truck traffic, shift changes or municipal restrictions could affect access.

In many cases, the survey is completed before artwork finalisation and sign manufacture begins, which keeps the overall job moving. If a client needs a quick turn for an urgent opening, sale, or compliance issue, we will prioritise the visit where possible and advise what can be done fast and what needs a bit longer. A rushed survey is rarely a good survey, so we keep it efficient but not careless.

For maintenance checks, we can revisit older signage at intervals that suit the exposure. Outdoor signs facing full sun, road spray or heavy dust may need a look-over every 6 to 12 months. Signs in sheltered office parks can often go longer, but any fading, loose fixings or lifted vinyl should be dealt with promptly before the problem spreads.

Pricing Approach And Maintenance Intervals

Site survey pricing is based on distance from Boksburg, the number of areas to be checked, access complexity and whether a report or additional measurements are required. A single shopfront visit is not priced the same as a multi-building industrial survey, and that is fair. We quote upfront once we understand the scope, so you know what you are paying for before anyone steps on site.

Where a survey leads straight into manufacture and fitment, the site visit cost may be folded into the full signage project depending on the job size. For ongoing clients, especially those with regular branch changes or fleet updates, surveys can also be managed as part of a repeat service arrangement. That is helpful for estate agents, logistics operators and property groups who need the same standard at different locations.

Maintenance is usually scheduled around wear rather than a fixed calendar alone. As a guide, outdoor signs in direct sun, near busy roads or in areas with high pollution should be checked every 6 to 12 months. Vehicle graphics benefit from a quick inspection after the first few weeks to make sure edges are settled properly, then at regular service intervals after that. If a sign starts showing movement, cracked sealant or fading, it is better to act early than wait for a full failure. A small repair now can save a bigger replacement later, and the site survey gives us the exact history to work from.

Questions we get asked

Do you do site surveys before quoting a sign job?

Yes. A survey helps confirm the size, fixing method and access before manufacture starts, so the quote and the install plan are based on real site conditions.

Can you survey more than one area on the same property?

Yes, we can check multiple sign positions on one site, such as a main entrance, warehouse face, parking direction board and safety signs at the same visit.

What if the site has restricted access or safety rules?

We work around site procedures where possible, including inductions, delivery times and access controls. If a lift or extra equipment is needed, we will flag that early.
