Clear exit signs for busy buildings
Fire exit signs do one simple job, they show people where to go when normal movement stops and the building needs to empty quickly. That means the sign has to be easy to spot from a distance, readable in low light, and placed where there is no doubt about the route. In factories, offices, shops and body corporate spaces, the right sign can save time and reduce confusion during a fire, power cut or any other emergency.
We make fire exit signs for interior passages, stairwells, warehouse doors, loading bays, corridors and shared public areas. If your site has more than one route, we can mark each direction clearly with arrows, pictograms and text. Where a building has mixed use, for example offices above workshops, the signage should be matched to the actual movement of people on site, not just the floor plan on paper.
Materials, sizes and visibility options
Most fire exit signs are made in lightweight rigid board, aluminium composite, acrylic or self-adhesive vinyl, depending on where they will be fixed and how much handling they may take. For indoor passages and offices, 3 mm to 5 mm board is common. For exterior doors, parking areas and exposed wall faces, a more durable face with weather resistance is better. Reflective and photoluminescent options are useful where lighting is weak or load-shedding affects normal visibility.
- Standard sizes: 150 x 200 mm, 200 x 300 mm, 300 x 450 mm and custom formats
- Fixing types: drilled and screwed, double-sided tape, stand-off mounts or applied vinyl
- Finishes: matte, gloss, reflective, glow-in-the-dark or printed colour background
- Formats: left arrow, right arrow, straight ahead, door push, emergency assembly point and extinguisher markers
If your premises already use a standard sign family, we can match the layout so everything looks consistent. That matters in larger sites because people follow familiar symbols faster than they read long wording.
Where fire exit signs suit best
These signs suit any place where people may need to move out quickly and safely. In Boksburg and the East Rand we commonly supply them for factories, logistics yards, schools, churches, retail centres, office parks, clinics and residential estates. They are also important in older buildings where corridors have been altered over time and the route is no longer obvious.
For sites with more than one entrance or exit, we can mark the route from each area to the nearest safe way out. If an area contains emergency equipment, such as extinguishers, hose reels or break-glass points, the sign set should support that equipment too. In some buildings, the issue is not only fire. It is also after-hours access, visitors unfamiliar with the site and contractors who do not know the building well.
- Best for corridors, staircases, lifts lobbies, exits and assembly points
- Useful where contractors, staff or the public move through the site
- Recommended for indoor and outdoor evacuation routes
- Helps with compliance checks and routine safety audits
Installation on site, with or without lighting
We handle site surveys, sign placement, manufacture and installation. For a proper fit, the sign should be fixed at eye level or slightly above, in line with the direction people will approach from. It must not be hidden behind doors, shelving, beams or stored stock. In larger warehouses, signs often need to be repeated along the route so people do not miss the next turn.
Some signs are purely passive and need no power. Others work better with nearby lighting, or with internal illumination where the area is dim. If a sign is intended to be viewed in the dark, we will advise on the best material and mounting position. For buildings with generator backup or emergency lighting, the sign still needs to be legible if that backup is only partially active. If your site uses gas equipment, plant rooms or storage zones, exit direction signs should be planned so they do not conflict with hazard labels or access restrictions.
- No power needed for standard printed, reflective or photoluminescent signs
- Powered illuminated signs may need wiring, isolation and safe connection points
- Site access should allow safe mounting on walls, doors, posts or gantries
- We can install during maintenance windows to limit disruption
Care, servicing and replacement after wear
Fire exit signs work best when they stay clean and legible. Dust, oil film, sun fade and accidental impact can all reduce visibility. In workshops, signs may pick up grime faster than in offices, while outdoor signs face rain, wind and UV exposure. On coastal routes and humid areas, corrosion around fixings can become an issue too, so the mounting method matters as much as the printed face.
We can assist with maintenance visits, sign refurbishment and vinyl removal if an old sign set needs replacing. During routine servicing, check whether arrows still match the current route, whether the sign is still at the correct height, and whether a door change or partition move has blocked the line of sight. If your building has been altered after a fit-out, the old exit sign may now point to the wrong place, which is a common problem on active sites.
What to check before you order
Before placing an order, it helps to confirm the exact route, the viewing distance and the mounting surface. A sign that is too small for a long passage will not help in an emergency, while one that is too large can clutter a neat interior. We also need to know whether the sign will be indoors or outdoors, whether it must face direct sun, and whether any part of the site is exposed to moisture, vibration or regular cleaning with chemicals.
Please have these details ready if possible:
- Required wording, arrows and symbols
- Size of each sign and how many are needed
- Where the sign will be fixed, wall, door, post or ceiling hang
- Whether it must be reflective, glow-in-the-dark or standard print
- Any site rules, working hours or access limits for installation
- Whether matching safety signs are also needed for equipment or assembly points
For a new site or a revised layout, our team can help you plan the sign set from start to finish. Lerato Mokoena handles sales, Ayesha Patel sets up the artwork, Johan Pretorius oversees production, and Sibusiso Khumalo manages installation on site. That way the signs arrive ready for the real conditions on your premises, not just the drawing board.
